The folks at Futuremark are putting the final touches on a new version of the popular 3DMark benchmark suite, one that promises cross platform benchmarking, meaning you can compare scores from Windows, Windows RT, Android, and iOS devices. It's slated to launch in January 2013, but in the meantime, you can view a handful of screenshots from the Cloud Gate test in our gallery below.

Cloud Gate is one of three tests included in the upcoming version of 3DMark. This particular one is intended for Windows notebooks and typical home PCs running DirectX 10 hardware. It does use a DirectX 11 engine, but it's limited to Direct3D feature level 10.0, making it suitable for testing DirectX 10 compatible components, Futuremark says.

"It is also an ideal benchmark for entry-level DirectX 11 integrated graphics solutions that could struggle to run the more demanding Fire Strike test. Cloud Gate will be available only in the Windows versions of 3DMark initially," Futuremark added.

The new 3DMark will launch initially for Windows, followed by versions for Android, iOS, and Windows RT "soon after."
