CCleaner Reaches 1 Billion Downloads, Joins Elite Club

CCleaner leaves no stone unturned when scanning systems for unnecessary files.

Old school vets remember when CCleaner was called Crap Cleaner. Piriform launched the freemium utility almost a decade ago, and we still like to use it after all these years to clean up unwanted files and cache that tends to accumulate. So do many others, which would explain why it's been download more than a billion times, according to Piriform. Remarkable, CCleaner has been installed on one quarter of the world's PCs and now spans 200 countries and more than 45 languages.

"We're very excited to have reached the one-billion downloads milestone. This is a huge achievement for everyone at Piriform, and thanks go out to our millions of users," said Piriform CEO Guy Saner. "We're looking forward to improving our existing products, and providing our users with some exciting new products in the New Year as we extend into mobile and cloud-based solutions."

That kind of longevitiy for a freemium utility is a little rare these days. In fact, not many software titles can boast 1 billion downloads (Firefox is one of them). In addition to the free version, CCleaner is also available in paid forms, running $25 for the Professional Edition and $35 for the Business Editition.

Looking ahead to 2013, Piriform is planning to announce some new cloud and mobile products.
