The addition of Weapon Proficiencies in MW3 is the latest in a long line of additions that we are going to be seeing in Modern Warfare 3. And with all of these added extras to the game, it is easy to get mixed up a little on what is what.
The Weapon Proficiencies are much like anything else experienced in the game (or any another Modern Warfare title) in that you will gradually unlock them as you progress. As you become more experienced with a certain weapon, you will gradually unlock all of the 10 proficiencies, one by one.
The easiest way to grasp the idea of Weapon Proficiencies in MW3 is by thinking of it as nothing more than a perk for your gun. While we are all familiar with using perks on our characters, implementing them on our guns is something that is completely new. Let’s say that you are particularly fond of the SCAR-L. If you use it enough, you will soon unlock the first of the Weapon Proficiencies; this being Kick. Here, you have only unlocked Kick for the SCAR-L, for every other gun you still have to get the kills to unlock it. So having said that, the next obvious question would be what are all the weapon proficiencies?

MW3 Weapon Proficiencies
.
Kick – Pretty self-explanatory. Reduces the recoil experienced when firing a weapon. This would be best suited for high-recoil guns such as the AK-47.
Range – Using this weapon proficiency increases the range of your weapon. Here you would be best off using it on short-ranged weapons such as SMG’s or shotguns. It is important to note that this weapon proficiency will not be available for Sniper Rifles or LMG’s.
Attachment – This proficiency is interesting as it replaces what was previously a perk. Using it allows you to have 2 attachments on your gun.
Focus – Implementing the focus proficiency will allow you to effectively reduce the amount of “flinch” you experience when being shot at.
Melee – As the name implies, using this proficiency will affect your melee. To be specific, it gives you a faster melee attack, and is only available for SMG’s.
Stability – Implementing the stability proficiency will reduce the amount of sway you experience.
Impact – Using this one will give your bullets further penetration through walls and other barriers. This is essentially the same thing as the Deep Impact perk.
Speed – Here you can speed up movement and agility. This proficiency applies to only Sniper Rifles and LMG’s.
Damage – This one is much like your average extra-damage perk, but only applies to shotguns.
Breath – Using this weapon proficiency will allow you to hold your breath while looking down the sights of your gun. This applies to all guns with the exception of Sniper Rifles, as it is already available.
So as you can see, you are going to have a lot of choice with these Weapon Proficiencies in MW3. By experimenting with what Weapon Proficiencies go well with your playing style and favorite weapons, you can make sure that you get the most out of this new feature to Call of Duty.
